University of California San Francisco

Funded Project

As a NOPREN collaborating center, the University of California San Francisco, in partnership with Feeding America, is developing and evaluating policies which support food banks to solicit, inventory, store, and distribute healthy products, with an emphasis on fresh fruits and vegetables. This project will determine how to:

  1. best provide national support for the implementation of nutrition policy in food banks, and
  2. leverage the infrastructure and enormous capacity of the food bank system to support national nutrition priorities in low-income communities.

Key Activites

This project aims to:

  • Systematically interview Executive Directors/CEOs (n=30) of food banks across the Feeding America network to rigorously examine barriers to and opportunities for distribution of healthier foods (particularly fresh fruits and vegetables).
    • Food banks will be purposely sampled to insure heterogeneity in a) degree to which the food bank currently distributes fresh fruits and vegetables, b) local resources for obtaining fresh products, and c) existing food bank capacity.
  • Establish policies and goals for the distribution of healthier foods by food banks in the Feeding America network, create and disseminate a toolkit to support food banks in implementing these policies, and assist the bottom decile of food banks with implementation.
  • Develop a protocol that allows food banks to monitor the dietary intake of their clients in order to determine the extent to which changes in food bank operations and programs to increase distribution of fruits and vegetables translates into changes in individual-level dietary intake of fruits and vegetables.
